whats the max HP a billet banshee transmission can handle?
when the hp gets to 200-250hp do they just start to be totaly unreliable?? Anyone know the hp at which they get unreliable? What hints do you have to make them last longer? I just dont want to tear the engine down every 10 runs to replace shift forks or gears...want to do it right...once...

just depends , they have the ability to hold 400+ but like anything out there at 250+ when things go wrong they go very wrong , my twin 1200 has never even burnt a fork but the 4 cylinder has ripped 9 trannies apart, the triple has been relatively good on tranny parts, its between 250 and 300 the difference is weight of rotating mass and how hard you hit it IMO, just some clutch work on the quad and it has done good on forks and gears but I promise if you loose a chain or something similar 400 hp wont even blink an eye and grinding metal meat most all of our trouble was caused by a separate incidence.

you wont have any problems with a charged 535 overpowering the tranny, not saying you couldnt hurt one but the tranny itself is strong enough

Great info The bike will be 290lb's... drag slick... wierd, I thought the banshee transmission was weaker than that?
for 250hp...can I just use a billet second and cryo the rest? Do folks use billet seconds because they are the weak link?

On a side note....anyone ever use a harley transmission on the banshee? I was looking at doing that with a snow motor.. but it would not fit my frame. Seemed like a great option. Tranny is cheap and tough...$2k comes with under cut gears, beffy setup ready for drag racing. Maybe with the big hp motors it would be a option... simple to repair, no need to split cases every time the tranny messes up? Has it been done??

oh man lol sorry bout that i just assumed thats was what was meant with numbers like 250 hp I did run a stock banshee tranny with a billet 2nd on a almost 200 hp cougar it did pretty good till I rode it lol it let 4th go. for the most part any thing over 160 i would go full billet, either the 5 speed or the 4 speed, if you are wanting a 1/4 mile pass the 6 speed from Robinson does good

the biggest problem with other trannies , and I do know of a couple of guys who have tried is the ratios between gears are never in the right ball park.

I think Packard did something with a baker tranny years ago. But not sure on the setup.

triple heat? I believe. that is one of my favorite bikes I have seen but I think the ratios just keep it put up we are limited to a 2.36 primary ratio

Ya, with big tires out back.... ive got 236 gears in both my 535 engines...motorcyle drag bike...17 inch slick.. goes through the 1/4 traps in 6th.. with a real small sprcoket in the back! I think the baker tranny can be setup with diffrent gears...I was talking with them the other day... anyone got a pic of a bike with this setup? Wouldnt that be sweet to never crack the cases again for a simply tranny issue SWEET...

yep you can change forks without even pulling the clutch cover

Gulp....a 535 banshee...gulp.... turbo? 22 lbs of boost. Well hey, thats how it will start out...Could end up as a pile of melted aluminum with some steel sticking out of it LOL. I am shooting for 250hp... I was only going to do 150-180hp but my turbo expert buddy said we could do a bunch more... since were gonna do it right... Time will tell....

Anything special I should know about running a billet trans? Special break in? Special oil, shift forks, drum...grease on forks?

the most important thing is the springs need to be balanced to where they hold the fork in the neutral position and not off balance to where they try to push the fork to much back into the previous gear. some guys run them without the fork springs, I like to run them but I make sure to set the right length of each spring , other than that I run ATF and break them in by trying to win the next round lol

In the pic I see 3 forks... a billet 4 speed trans only needs two.. Tim, do you set up the springs the same way (3 springs on shaft) on a billet 4 speed?

Since the subject was brought up figured I'd try to get some more information, I've had trouble burning forks.

that was for a billet 5 speed, you are correct, the four speed uses 2 number 2 forks in the rear and no fork on the input side, you set the 4 speed up with only the middle and left side springs , as the spring for first gear is in the tranny itself, and every four speed I have installed needed to be modified in the springs to be balanced

it is really hard to explain this through posts so if you have any questions at all feel free to call me and I will help out in any way here to keep you guys from having completely preventable problems, there are a couple of other things I do for prevention on the shafts and one particular shim on older setups, the shim on 3rd wheel was originally to thin and will break , all of the newer setups are good to go and the older shafts needed better chamfering for lubrication on second gear so the bushing wont seize to the shaft, you can see the sharp edges on the first shaft picture, just a quick little bit of chamfering will prevent this. all of the new stuff that you order will have these issues addressed but older setups need to be checked

there is an old thread some where that I go into the spirng balancing with good detail and how to go through the process of checking them somewhere in the 2 stroke section

a qwick note on the billet tranny is that the back cut design on the dogs and ramps is so good that any back loading is bad on forks, pull that clutch in out of power.

So if I buy a new robinson gear set, all the issues will be fixed..... all I wll need to do is the spring balancing?
