Good God almight - a possible step in the right direction - outstanding.
There are many many builders that will support a standardized minimum weight rule ( not openly, but mostly by phone & PM) There are also many racers that will openly agree that a weight regulation is the best way to get this grass roots sport on the move.
Ive noticed the developing database you have been constructing Charlie, that is a start - and for that - we thank you.
Here is one of my earlier "soap box" moments for those whom think this is not a good idea.
--------------
... the lack of a weight rule has stunted this "sports" growth !
The weight of an average man has EVERYTHING to do with drag racing - as power to weight are the prime factors in this sport more than any other form of motorsports.
I think what Eric has attempted is the most stand-up thing to be done in a long time - is it perfect - No ... but at least it is a step in the right direction.
Drag racing = accelerating your vehicle against another, with the first to the finish being the winner.
Well obviously there are some problems with leaving it that wide open.
There needs to be some rules.
So how far do we race ?
How do we insure one participant doesn`t have to travel a further distance than the other?
How do we insure a fare start for both parties to be sure one isn`t leaving before the other ?
In the case of a close ending of the race, how do we determine who crossed the line first ?
Now we start narrowing it down so that it is as fare as possible as to draw more poeople into the "sport"
I mean ... who is going to line up a 400ex against Wild Thing ?
Class structure !
4 stroke vs. 2 stroke
# of cylinders
CC breakdown
Method of Aspiration
and so on ...
Is it just me or shouldn`t the WEIGHT of the vehicle/rider combo participating be as equal as possible to insure as fare of a race as possible ... IMO this factor should be MUCH further up on the list.
I mean come on, without at least a min. weight rule - we might as well just use a rubber band start - with Wild Thing running 275 ft & the 400ex making a full 300ft pull - with a couple of guys running stopwatches at the end of the track ...
A true ambassador of the sport will not see this as "a big guy whining" or even a "small guy being penalized" but rather an effort to bring this "hobbie sport" out of the dark ages, and to bring fareness to a motorsport that rely`s SO HEAVILY upon the power/weight equation. With the main goal being as close and fare a race as possible, leaving the victory to the participant that is a better Rider/Tuner/Builder.
