An appropriate one word description of memorial day
weekend would be HOT! it was 100 degrees in camp and
the action on the
hill was much hotter. I have never
seen such a gathering of fine machinery. I was unaware
that Nevada was the yearly meeting place of the
fastest hill shooters from California, Oregon and
Utah, on Memorial weekend. At the top of the heap was
an 80 mph. Honda 250r based 440 Rotax cylindered
machine ridden by 16yr. old Jed Packard (we'll call
him HUEVOS for short!), built by his dad, Dennis
Packard from Farmington, Utah. Not only was it
impressive that it was a single, but it was on alcohol
alone. Just imagine what it would do with nitrous?
Running a close second (and looking forward to a
re-match) was a 79mph 350 banshee on alcohol and
nitrous that belongs to B.J. Helis and ridden by Clay
Gardner, both of Vacaville, Ca. Now Clay, we'll have
to call him LOCOS HUEVOS for doing that scary ass
weebles wobble wheelie through the whoops and never
backing out of the juice!
Although we weren't set up well enough to get
everyone's info, here are the highlights of the
recorded speeds; 71 mph-alcohol 370 Banshee-John
Safarian-Burbank,Ca. 69mph-Nitrous Quadzilla/GSXR
1100-Pat?- Walnut Grove, Ca. 68mph-alcohol 350
Banshee-Clay Gardner-Vacaville, Ca. 62mph-alcohol
350-(Honda 250r)-Jim Mccune-St. George, Ut. And the
fastest of the stock displacement bikes that still
keeps the alcohol in the cooler instead of the tank,
was 57mph-350 Banshee-Mike Montoya, Citrus Heights,
Ca.
The word is that the next impromtu meeting of this
kind will happen labor day at Sand Mtn. Utah's KING OF
THE HILL COMPETITION. We can only hope that the "Sun
Gods" and the "Whoops Gods" will be more cooperative
than they were at this meeting. We would have liked to
have gotten some speeds on buggies also, but they
didn't brave the whoops.
GOT SAND?
